Why we built this

Tow rating is the number everyone quotes at the counter. Trailer payload and the truck's payload sticker are the numbers that actually bite. A buyer puts a 7,600 lb skid steer on a 10,000 lb trailer that already weighs 2,400 lb empty, and the trailer is over before the truck is even part of the conversation. Add a bucket, a set of forks, and the tongue weight landing on the truck's rear axle, and a setup that looked fine on paper is over a rated number in three places. This tool makes those interactions visible before anybody signs anything.

      How this is figured

      This check compares your cargo load against trailer payload, your loaded trailer against tow rating and hitch rating, your tongue-weight range against the truck payload sticker, and your estimated combined weight against GCWR when that value is entered.

      For tongue weight, the tool uses 10 to 15 percent of loaded trailer weight for bumper pull trailers and 15 to 25 percent for gooseneck trailers.

      The CDL prompt follows 49 CFR 383.91 and the definitions in 383.5, and there are two details most counter conversations miss. First, GCWR is defined as the greater of the manufacturer's rated value or the sum of the truck and trailer GVWRs, so this tool tests both and either one can trigger the prompt. Second, the commercial motor vehicle definition reads rating or weight, whichever is greater, so an estimated actual weight above a rating counts, which matters most on the overloaded setups this tool is built to catch. Group A is a towed unit over 10,000 lb paired with 26,001 lb or more combined. Group B is a single power unit at or above 26,001 lb GVWR, towing or not.

      Those rules cover vehicles used in commerce. Your state can be stricter, can apply its own rules to intrastate driving, may offer a non-commercial Class A or B for private and farm hauling, and may waive farm vehicle drivers operating near the farm under 49 CFR 383.3. This tool prompts you to check. It does not make the call. State rules, insurer expectations, and the details of your use still need verification.

      Can a half-ton truck tow a skid steer?

      A half-ton truck may tow or pull some small skid steer setups on paper, but many skid steer and trailer combinations lean hardest on payload, not tow rating. A 7,000 lb machine on a trailer that weighs 2,400 lb empty is already 9,400 lb before attachments, fuel, tools, and tongue weight. Whether a half-ton can pull a skid steer usually comes down to the door jamb payload sticker, because tongue weight lands on the truck long before the tow rating runs out.

      What size trailer do I need for a 7,000 lb skid steer?

      Start with trailer payload, not just GVWR. If the trailer weighs 2,400 lb empty, a 10,000 lb GVWR trailer has about 7,600 lb of available payload, so a 7,000 lb skid steer leaves little room for a bucket, forks, chains, or other cargo.

      Do I need a CDL to haul a skid steer?

      Under federal rules a Class A applies when the trailer is over 10,000 lb and the combination is 26,001 lb or more, and a Class B applies when the truck alone is 26,001 lb or more. Two details decide most skid steer setups: GCWR counts as the greater of the manufacturer's number or the truck and trailer GVWRs added together, and actual weight counts when it runs above a rating. Most three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups pulling a 14,000 lb equipment trailer land under 26,001 lb and stay clear, while a one-ton dually on a 20,000 lb gooseneck often does not. The federal rules apply to use in commerce, and hauling your own machine to your own job is usually business use. Your state can be stricter and several states issue a non-commercial Class A for private hauling, so confirm with your DMV and insurer. If what you are really asking is how much you can haul without a CDL, the practical answer is that the limits are the two thresholds above, applied to ratings and actual weight alike.       Why does my payload sticker matter more than my tow rating?

      Your payload sticker matters because tongue weight lands on the truck, along with people, tools, fuel, and cab cargo. A truck can have a tow rating that looks workable while the payload sticker is nearly used up.

      What is tongue weight, and how much of my truck's payload does it eat?

      Tongue weight is the part of the loaded trailer weight carried by the truck at the hitch. This tool estimates 10 to 15 percent for bumper pull trailers and 15 to 25 percent for gooseneck trailers, then adds people and tools in the truck.

      What is GCWR and where do I find it?

      GCWR is the gross combined weight rating for the truck and trailer combination. It usually comes from the towing guide for the exact cab, bed, axle, engine, and drivetrain, not from a generic model brochure.

      Is trailer GVWR the same as what the trailer can carry?

      No. On trailer GVWR vs payload: GVWR is the trailer's rated loaded weight, while usable payload is GVWR minus the trailer's own empty weight. A 14,000 lb trailer that weighs 3,200 lb empty has about 10,800 lb available before attachments and cargo. The number on the VIN plate is not the number you get to carry.

      What numbers should I bring to the trailer dealer?

      Bring the machine operating weight, attachment weights, trailer empty weight and GVWR, hitch or receiver rating, truck tow rating, payload sticker value, truck GVWR, and GCWR. The Haul Setup Brief formats those values so the dealer can quote from your actual setup.

      Gooseneck or bumper pull for a skid steer?

      It changes where the weight lands, not how much of it there is. A gooseneck carries roughly 15 to 25 percent of the loaded trailer weight at the hitch against roughly 10 to 15 percent for a bumper pull, so a gooseneck puts more weight on the truck and puts it over the rear axle rather than behind it. That usually tows better and eats more of the payload sticker. Run the same load both ways in this tool and watch the truck payload and hitch numbers move while the trailer payload number stays put.
